Abdelmoneim I. Younis, DVM, MS, PhD, HCLD/CC (ABB), EMB 

Dr. Younis is Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mercer University School of Medicine as well as the Embryologist and Scientific Director of the IVF and Andrology Laboratories of Central Georgia Fertility Institute. He is one of the first ten embryology practitioners (EMB) to be certified by the American College of Embryology (EMBCOL). He also holds certifications of High-complexity Clinical Laboratory Director (HCLD), and Clinical Consultant (CC) by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB). 

Dr. Younis has over 27 years of experience in Reproductive Biology and Human Embryology.    He is the only certified embryology practitioner working solo in a full-service fertility center in rural area of middle Georgia. His multiple clinical skills and tasks include tutoring and teaching medical students and supervision/consultation to OB/GYN residents and local physicians.  Dr. Younis enjoys serving patients and the community with the skills and knowledge he gained over the years. In 2009 his CGFI Lab achieved the top success rate in the state of Georgia (CDC data of under 35 year’s age group).

 

Dr. Younis received his Veterinary Medicine Degree from the University of Khartoum in Sudan in 1983 and his Master of Science and Doctorate (PhD) Degrees from the University of Georgia in 1991 under supervision of Dr. Benjamin Brackett. His graduate studies on in vitro maturation and fertilization of cow and goat oocytes were well recognized.  After that he joined Harvard University School of Medicine and New England Primate Center as an Instructor and worked with Dr. John Biggers and published original research on primate oocyte cryobiology and maturation. Dr.  Younis then worked at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta and combined his work as researcher at the Yerkes Primate Center and Embryologist at Emory Reproductive Center to personally perform hundreds of human IVF-ICSI cases.

 

Dr. Younis is a member of ASRM’s SRBT Board of Directors (Nomination Committee Member-at-Large), ESHRE, the AAB College of Reproductive Biology and the International Embryo Transfer Society. He has been reviewer for several scientific journals and member of ASRM Ad-hoc abstract review committee. He is also Scientific Reviewer for NIH-NCRR site visit, external Scientific Reviewer for grants submitted to NIH-NCRR and Smithsonian Institution’s Scholarly Studies Program.  He was Co- organizer of an NIH-NCRR funded International workshop to evaluate current methods for cryopreservation of gametes and embryos in 1998.  His current research interests include investigation of regulatory role of specific microRNA levels in follicular fluid, granulosa/cumulus cells and peripheral blood in women undergoing IVF.
