Bhushan K. (BK) Gangrade, Ph.D.


Dr. Bhushan K. (BK) Gangrade, Ph.D. is the Laboratory Director at the Center for Reproductive Medicine in Winter Park, FL. Dr. Gangrade received his Bachelor of Science (1976) and Master of Science (1978) from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi, India. He was awarded a Ph.D. in 1984. In 1986, Dr. Gangrade was awarded the Rockefeller Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship to study the role of Growth Factors in Ovarian folliculogenesis under the mentorship of Professor Paul F Terranova at the Department of Physiology, University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. In 1989, he moved to the Women’s Research Institute/University of Kansas School of Medicine Wichita for second Post-Doctoral training under the guidance of Dr. Jeffrey May, where he extended his research on the role of growth factors in steroidogenesis in porcine ovary. He was the Principal Investigator and the recipient of the Kansas Health Foundation Young Investigator Award in 1992 for the Research Project entitled “Regulation of theca cell steroidogenesis by growth factors”.

In 1990-1991, Dr. Gangrade became interested in the field of Assisted Reproduction and received training (Human Embryology and Andrology) under the direction of Drs. Jeff May and Brooks Keel. After completing the Post-Doctoral training, Dr. Gangrade joined the Center for Reproductive Medicine, Orlando, FL in 1993 as the Director of IVF Laboratory and is continuing at this position. Dr. Gangrade has extensive experience in the field of Assisted Reproduction. He has personally performed over 700 testicular sperm extractions and sperm cryopreservation procedures. He has performed/supervised over 10,000 oocyte retrievals. He is proficient in all micromanipulation procedures and has trained several embryologists in ICSI and embryo biopsy techniques.  Dr. Gangrade was instrumental in achieving the first pregnancy by ICSI (1995), in vitro maturation (IVM) of oocytes (2005) and cryopreserved/vitrified oocytes (2010) in Central Florida.

Dr. Gangrade has been a CAP inspector for Reproductive Laboratories since 2000. He is licensed as a High Complexity Clinical Laboratory Director (HCLD) by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) and as Clinical Laboratory Director, Department of Health, State of Florida.

Dr. Gangrade has published over 30 peer reviewed research articles and book chapters.  He is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), Florida Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (FSREI), Amercian Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) and he also served on the board of the American College of Embryology (EMBCOL).
